We were playing in a county teams tournament when, as West, I picked up the following: S A K Q J x x x H J x x x x D x C void
North passes and you can imagine my thoughts when East opened one Heart!! South overcalls two Clubs and I bid four Clubs, splinter. North bids five Clubs so partner bids Stop, six Hearts. I'm thinking that partner doesn't know my hand and is still bidding freely to six (albeit in a competitive auction) so with the hidden spades providing plenty of discards we ought to have a play for seven. As our partnership crest has the motto "Never Knowingly Underbid" I did bid the Grand. Our opponents, not much more experienced than we are decided not to trust us (how unfair!) and led the Ace of Clubs. With partner putting down the following you can see the story had a happy middle chapter: S x x H A K Q x x x D KQJ C x x As the saying goes, "If you can't be good, be lucky!" At the other table the bidding went: N E S W - 1H 5C 5H 6C - - 6H - - -
